What other nomads & remote workers say

A new digital nomad finds her way

"There are so many options and it's difficult to sort through all the information yourself. It's helpful to be able to discuss all the possibilities with Henkjan. It saves you a lot of time and you can trust that the information he provides as an expert is accurate, which isn't always the case online."Joelle van Beers, Founder & digital nomad, Remoteworkdeals.com

A remote worker finds a better balance

As a sole proprietor I was already taking steps toward realizing my dream life: working remotely abroad for Dutch clients. But I had questions about what this would mean in practice. I saw an article about Henkjan and got in touch. I received a quick response. He gave me great actionable tips and connected me with other specialists. Real talk: that dream life isn't going to build itself

What's stopping you from pursuing the nomad lifestyle? Does Mercury need to come out of retrograde? Do you need permission from your 9-5 homebody best friend finally saying that yes, you should live a life of adventure? #sarcasm

Or, more importantly, do you need to FEEL ready?

Truth is, none of that matters. Just like Mercury laps us because it can (like a planetary Strava addict), there will always be risk-averse people around you.

They probably need handholding to go to the local supermarket, let alone start a business or go on a solo trip to Milan, Italy.

Why listen to them?

And on the point of you feeling ready?

You can wait until you’re 80, but you won’t know if you’re ready until you actually do it

And by then it's too late. At that point you can wallow in regret for NOT taking the chances you were given when you were younger. That may sound harsh, but it's the truth.

Looking back, I wish I started earlier on my digital nomad journey

In 2015, when I quit my corporate job, started a solo marketing business and bought a one-way ticket from Amsterdam, The Netherlands to Perth, Australia, I was wondering the same things as you probably do now.

Will this work? Can I sustain this lifestyle? And how does it look like for me?

And I get it, it's hard NOT to feel overwhelmed by it all. Every other post on social confuses you with diametrically opposing advice or is just AI-slop inserted for engagement. And asking ChatGPT? Well, good luck with that. Where do you think this autocomplete on steroids (that makes up things as a feature) gets its info from? Those same threads. It's hard figuring out what's correct to begin with, let alone what is right for you.

Yet, I managed to skip the analysis-paralysis phase.

I traded overthinking for action and research overwhelm for figuring things out as I went along.Mind you, nomading wasn’t as widespread or popular like it is now. So there was a lot to do in the experiencing and figuring out department. Although it's not for everybody, it's how I roll: throwing myself into the deep end and go from there.

And that’s also the beauty of it.

You can vanlife, overland or liveaboard like your favorite influencers, or find your own way. You can go on workations to Bali, Indonesia like so many, or find your own way. After all, it's your life and your dream.

But you gotta take that first step. And I’m here to help you take it.

You can basically leapfrog your figuring out phase with my help and get up to speed faster.Remember, taking action is the best thing you can do. You'll find out if it is or isn't for you. Both are great outcomes.Because you've learned something profound about yourself and have a new direction in life to chase. And don't we all crave direction in life?

To set things in motion you need someone with experience to talk to.

Someone independent without any bias or personal agenda when it comes to you or your situation.Let me help you out of the analysis paralysis phase, like I did with Joelle.

Let's book a call, here's how I work

for remote workers, expats & WFH'ers

Navigating the wild west west of remote work surprises

You’re about to pull your hairs out in disbelief: the people on that vital work call are all frozen on your screen. The audio was a bleeping bad mess to begin with, now it’s a deafening silence.

While you close the laptop lid, it dawns on you: this is bad. Really bad.

Yet you contacted the host weeks prior and they said the apartment had a fast broadband connection. “No worries, others Netflix all the time”, was the answer. Other reviewers gave it 5 stars, including remote workers.

It seemed like heaven on earth and great to work. This couldn’t go wrong, amirite? #sarcasm

So, where did you go wrong?

Well, did you ask for a screenshot of a speed test that showed there’s enough upload speed to make online calls?Did you check for backup lines? Like if there was 4/5G reception in the area? Or did you think to go to a quiet cafe with good WiFi after checking the line yourself just to be sure?

Did you consider that Airbnb reviews have to be read between the lines?

Research shows that they skew towards the positive for a variety of reasons. And don’t forget for some a workation is answering a few emails. You can do that over 2G if need be.

That’s a long list of considerations to take into account.

And that’s just for the line of a workation rental when you need bandwidth for a video call.

What about that dedicated workspace that was promised?

Is it large enough to hold your laptop? What is your game plan if the neighbors turn out to be 7 German teenagers with the biggest portable mega bass speaker of the tech season?I could go on. Suffice to say, there’s a lot to consider when you’re going on a regular holiday, even more so when you go on workation.

It’s like trying to take the work from home (WFH) setup with you, without all the weight.

It gets even more challenging when you car camp, vanlife, overland or liveaboard your way around. These and more all come with their own challenges: from transport to cramped living spaces and from permits to connectivity.

If you’re committed, you know the learnings never end.

You get smarter about how much you pack, what you pack and which pack you end up packing for which destination.Like, I’m a photographer too. And in an ideal world I’d take all my gear everywhere with me. That’s not practical and - depending on the destination - downright dangerous. So I have my strategies for it. Obvious example, I know. But you get the picture.

That’s why it’s great to compare notes with fellow remote workers who’ve been there and done that.

In a pre-Starlink era, I’ve worked off-grid over slow satellite connections whilst dealing with limited solar power in the Spanish mountains.I’ve pieced together kit meant for sailing boats to get a few more bars of cellular reach up in the French mountains.I’ve been in sleepy villages, bustling cities and sprawling metropoles. They all have their own challenges.

That’s why I offer these calls to all types of remote and WFH workers.

You can compare notes with me, I can offer guidance to improve your gear or way of working - all the way up to finding good strategies to navigate rentals.Someone independent without any bias or personal agenda when it comes to you or your situation.Let me help you out, like I did with Jeroen.
